Whitebaiting

Whitebaiting

Different species of the Galaxiidae family have developed different life cycles. Five species are well known to New Zealanders because they belong to the group known as whitebait, a seafood delicacy usually served up in fritters. On returning from sea to fresh water to spawn, the fish are netted by whitebaiters – patient anglers such as Norman Higgins, pictured at the Pāuatahanui inlet.
