Story: Shipwrecks

Map of diving wrecks

Some of New Zealand’s famous sunken shipwrecks have become attractions for divers. These include the wrecks of the Wairarapa, Elingamite and Mikhail Lermontov. The more important of these sites are marked on this map, and the names of the wrecks can be discovered when your cursor passes over the sinking ships. The map does not include New Zealand naval vessels deliberately sunk to create diving attractions – HMNZS Tui and Waikato at Tutukākā, and HMNZS Wellington sunk off Island Bay in November 2005.
