Henry Hill, 1849–1933

Although most of his working life was spent as a school inspector, Henry Hill had a keen interest in volcanology, and he published his observations. From his travels in Hawke’s Bay, he was the first to document the widespread cover of volcanic ash.

Algernon Phillips Withiel Thomas, 1857–1937

A. P. W. Thomas was professor of natural science at Auckland University College. He made a detailed investigation of the Tarawera area immediately after the eruption of 10 June 1886. His report, published in July 1888, is the best contemporary scientific account of the eruption.
