Christian Gottlieb Ferdinand von Hochstetter, 1829–1884

Austrian geologist Ferdinand von Hochstetter visited New Zealand in 1858–59, and his observations laid the foundations for geological knowledge of New Zealand. He spent the rest of his career based in Vienna. After the devastating Peru–Chile tsunami in 1868, Hochstetter compiled information on the disturbances around the Pacific caused by the tsunami, including information from New Zealand.

In 1844, while Mary Rymill was working at the Church Missionary Society station at Orua Bay, near Manukau Heads, a tidal wave swept through the house.
