Distant-source tsunamis (1st of 2)
This map shows the directions from which major tsunamis have reached New Zealand since the 1860s. The term ‘run-up’ refers to the height of the tsunami wave above normal sea level. The area inundated by a tsunami depends on the run-up (height) of the wave and the slope of the land.
It is clear that future tsunamis from distant sources may come from any direction.
