Civil defence emergencies, 1970–99
This shows the number of civil defence emergencies over three decades. Almost two-thirds of these were caused by flooding, which was severe almost every year in different parts of New Zealand. There was only one emergency in the 30 years that was caused by an earthquake (Edgecumbe, 1987), although it was the single most costly event.
