Auckland – city of volcanoes

Auckland – city of volcanoes

Auckland city is built around small volcanic cones – many formed in the last 100,000 years. The most recent eruption took place about 600 years ago, when Rangitoto Island (upper right) was formed. The fertile soils in the Auckland region developed from the weathering of volcanic ash.
