William Herbert Guthrie-Smith, 1862–1940

Herbert Guthrie-Smith’s book Tutira: the story of a New Zealand sheep station (1921) recounted the history of his farm in southern Hawke’s Bay. Included was a chapter entitled ‘Surface slips’, which described the susceptibility of the soft rocks in the North Island’s east coast to slipping.

James Hector, 1834–1907

James Hector’s Outline of New Zealand geology (1886) was a summary of the first 20 years' work of the Geological Survey, and included information on landslides.
