Story: Historic volcanic activity

Ruapehu crater, 1945

As lava rose in the Ruapehu crater during 1945, visitors were able to obtain a spectacular view of the eruption from the crater rim. At most times the eruption was not explosive, but being so close to an erupting volcano is always hazardous.
