Christian Gottlieb Ferdinand von Hochstetter, 1829–1884

Ferdinand von Hochstetter was the first professional geologist to visit New Zealand, in 1859–60. He produced maps of the volcanic cones around Auckland, and recognised that Mt Ngāuruhoe was active. His books, published in the 1860s, described the volcanic and geothermal wonders of Northland, also making it clear that future eruptions were likely.
