Silt-covered farmland (1st of 2)
When low-lying river flats are flooded, they become saturated with water and covered by river silt after the water recedes. The immediate effect is to kill the pasture, causing enormous problems for farmers. In the medium term, the silt forms a new soil, but grass needs to be replanted. This photograph of the Kopane area was taken immediately after the 2004 Manawatū floods.
