Floods

Edward Dobson, 1816/1817?–1908

Edward Dobson was provincial engineer in Canterbury in the 1860s, and oversaw the building of the Lyttelton railway tunnel. Christchurch suffered disastrous flooding from the Waimakiriri River in 1868, and Dobson designed some of the earliest flood protection works, including a canal through Kaiapoi.

George Fairweather Moonlight, 1832–1884

George Moonlight was an explorer and gold miner who travelled widely in the South Island. In later years he bought the Commercial Hotel in Murchison, where he was also postmaster and storekeeper. A serious flood in 1878 damaged the hotel and forced a move to higher ground.
