Annual cost of New Zealand floods, 1976–2004
This graph shows the annual cost of floods over the period from 1976 to 2004, based on insurance payment data given by the Insurance Council of New Zealand. Amounts are in New Zealand dollars, adjusted to 2004 values. Yearly costs vary greatly – over $100 million was paid out in 1984 and 2004, but there were no costs in some other years. Damaging floods occur in varying locations, and during this 28-year period most parts of the country have been affected.
