New Zealand straddles the collision zone between two huge moving plates of the earth’s crust; it is jolted by thousands of earthquakes every year. Most are very small, but a few have caused widespread damage. These quakes signal the continuing upheaval that has raised New Zealand above the sea and produced its dramatic mountain landscapes.
