Terracotta bowl
Throughout New Zealand in the 1960s and 1970s small-scale potteries sprang up, especially in alternative lifestyle areas such as the Coromandel and Nelson. This piece, by Coromandel sculptor Barry Brickell, was part of the 'Treasures of the Underworld' exhibition at the New Zealand Pavilion at ’92 Expo in Seville, Spain. Brickell’s massive terracotta bowls, made from sandy clay, made reference to the Lapita pottery of the ancient Melanesian voyagers.
