Rangiahuta Alan Herewini Ruka Broughton, 1940–1986
Ruka Broughton was a tohunga and university lecturer from the Ngā Rauru tribe. He was also an expert in tribal knowledge. The great adze Te Āwhiorangi passed into his guardianship.

Peter Henry Buck, 1877?–1951
Peter Buck (Te Rangi Hīroa) was from the Ngāti Mutunga tribe. He was a renowned doctor, anthropologist and politician. He carried out much scholarly work on traditional Māori society and culture, including pounamu artefacts.
