Alexander Crow McGeorge, 1868–1953

Engineer Alexander McGeorge was an active figure in the Otago dredging boom of the late 1890s and early 1900s. In July 1902 his company’s dredge the Lady Ranfurly set a world record dredging return of 1,234 ounces for four-and-a-half days dredging on the Kawarau River.

Charles McQueen, 1836–1906

Charles McQueen pioneered gold dredging in Otago. In Dunedin foundries he built different types of dredges, including the first steam-powered dredge, named Dunedin. This dredge design is regarded as the prototype of the distinctive New Zealand style of dredge.

Charles Sew Hoy, 1836-1838?–1901

The most famous Chinese historical figure in Otago, Charles (Choie) Sew Hoy is remembered for his gold-mining and trading enterprises. He was a visionary who introduced a new style of gold dredge. He also successfully employed hydraulic elevators to work deep alluvial deposits at Nokomai in northern Southland.
