Engineer Alexander McGeorge was an active figure in the Otago dredging boom of the late 1890s and early 1900s. In July 1902 his company’s dredge the Lady Ranfurly set a world record dredging return of 1,234 ounces for four-and-a-half days dredging on the Kawarau River.

Charles McQueen pioneered gold dredging in Otago. In Dunedin foundries he built different types of dredges, including the first steam-powered dredge, named Dunedin. This dredge design is regarded as the prototype of the distinctive New Zealand style of dredge.

Charles Sew Hoy, 1836-1838?–1901

The most famous Chinese historical figure in Otago, Charles (Choie) Sew Hoy is remembered for his gold-mining and trading enterprises. He was a visionary who introduced a new style of gold dredge.
