Whāngārei marble (1st of 2)
The foyer of the Wellington Railway Station features slabs of the rock sold as Whāngārei marble – actually a hard limestone packed with shell fragments. Its colour is quite variable even within a single quarry, and different specimens may be in shades of yellow, cream and pink. It was widely used as decorative stone in entrance foyers.
