William Brassington, 1837-41?–1905

Stonemason William Brassington emigrated to Christchurch in 1863 and set up a stonemason’s yard. Over the next 25 years he completed the decorative stonework in many early Christchurch buildings.

Patrick Marshall, 1869–1950

Geologist Patrick Marshall had wide interests in the different rock types found in New Zealand, and prepared the first detailed account of New Zealand building stones (published in 1929).

Tasman Joseph McKee, 1911–1973

The McKee family established Lime and Marble Limited in Nelson to supply a variety of non-metallic minerals, and Tas McKee led the company from 1943 onwards. Building stone, especially marble, was a by-product from several of the company’s quarries.

John Lishman Potter, 1834–1931

John Potter worked as foreman on the construction of the Christchurch Anglican Cathedral. About 1871 he moved to Timaru, where he became known as a master craftsman.
