Miranda hot springs

Extensive hot springs at Miranda on the Firth of Thames were used by the people of the Ngāti Paoa tribe for generations, but remained inaccessible to Pākehā until well into the 20th century because there was no road to them. The area remained undeveloped until after the Second World War, by which time the popularity of swimming rivalled soaking. The complex today includes both private pools and what is billed as the largest thermal swimming pool in the southern hemisphere.
