Joseph George Ward, 1856–1930

Joseph Ward, who was prime minister from 1906 to 1912 and again from 1928 to 1930, was a great advocate of thermal pools, and backed the last burst of government investment in spas. In his final days he sought relief for his health problems at Rotorua, where he bathed daily in the Ward baths, named after him.
