Robert Graham, 1820–1885

Entrepreneur Robert Graham was one of the first businessmen to see the tourist potential of thermal areas. In 1845 he purchased land at Waiwera, north of Auckland, and developed the hot springs there after 1875. He also purchased land at Wairākei, north of Taupō, in 1881 and intended to develop a spa there. However, he died before he was able to realise all his plans for the resort.

Edward Lofley, 1838-1840?–1889

Formerly a seaman and member of the Armed Constabulary, the eccentric Edward Lofley became proprietor of The Glen, a spa and bathhouse near Taupō in the 1870s. After soaking in a hot thermal bath, patrons could cool off with a swim in the nearby stream.
