John (Jacky) Guard was among the first to hunt for whales from shore. He began whaling from Tory Channel in the late 1820s. The Guard family’s collection of whaling implements is among the treasures at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa in Wellington. This implement was used to scrape residual flesh from whalebones.
