This illustration of a flowering kōwhai, growing in a garden in Chelsea, London, appeared in Curtis’s Botanical Magazine in 1791. The tree grew from a seed brought from New Zealand by James Cook’s botanist, Joseph Banks. For protection during severe winter weather, it was covered with mats.
