William Pickering (left), director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL),shows US president Lyndon Johnson (right) pictures of the surface of Mars, taken by the Mariner spacecraft. Pickering was director of JPL, at Caltech (the California Institute of Technology), from 1954 until his retirement in 1976. Pickering led JPL efforts to develop the first American satellites and to send spacecraft to the moon, Venus and Mars. He was born in Wellington in 1910 and grew up in Havelock, Marlborough, then moved to California in the early 1930s.
