WAITANGI DAY
By the Waitangi Day Act of 1960, the 6th day of February in each year is known as Waitangi Day, to be observed throughout New Zealand as a national day of thanksgiving in commemoration of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi.
The generally accepted meaning of the name is Weeping Waters. In Southern Maori dialect the name is Waitaki, hence Waitaki River.
